Mike has been in the industry for over 16 years. He started after acquiring all the necessary academic experience and qualifications. He started a professional career in the media industry in 1996 (aged 24). He got his first job at WSYX/WTTE, where he worked as a weekend meteorologist.
In 1998, he started working as a chief meteorologist for the local Asheville, North Carolina, ABC affiliate “WLOS.” 
In 2003, Mike Bettes left WLOS after he got a job offer from The Weather Channel in Atlanta, Georgia. At The “Weather Channel,” he covered various major live storms, including the infamous Hurricanes Katrina and Sandy. Also, he covers tropical cyclones and other natural disasters news, such as winter storms and floods, and has been working with the channel for two decades and counting.
In 2007, he got an offer to co-host as a fill-in weather anchor at NBC’s The Today Show alongside the show’s host, Matt Lauer.
