Bob Odenkirk Biography
Bob Odenkirk’s life story starts in a place called Berwyn, Illinois, where he was born on October 22, 1962. He grew up in Naperville with six siblings.
His dad “Walter Henry Odenkirk” worked in the printing business, and his mom “Barbara Mary Odenkirk” was of German and Irish descent. But their marriage didn’t work out because of his dad’s struggles with alcohol.
This was tough for Bob, and he decided to stay away from alcohol as much as possible. He described his dad as distant and not really present in his life.
Bob didn’t like growing up in Naperville. He found it a bit boring, and he couldn’t wait to move to a big city where exciting things were happening. Sadly, his dad passed away because of bone cancer in 1986.
Educational Background
As for school, Bob went to Naperville North High School, and he graduated when he was just 16. He left school early because he didn’t want to be in high school anymore.
He thought he’d be too awkward in college, so he went to the College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn, Illinois.
After a year there, he moved to Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and then to Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Illinois.
That’s where he really got into comedy, doing radio shows and improving his writing and performance skills.
He even started a late-night radio comedy show called “The Prime Time Special ” while working as a radio DJ at SIU’s college station, WIDB.
Bob didn’t finish college because he was just three credits short of graduating, but he was ready to try his luck in the comedy world in Chicago.
He finally got his bachelor’s degree from SIU in 1984 after completing those missing credits at Columbia College Chicago.
Journey Into Comedy
Bob’s comedy journey began when he met people like Del Close at the Players Workshop and Robert Smigel.
They all worked together for years and eventually landed Bob on “Saturday Night Live.” He also did stand-up comedy and improv at places like the Who’s on First comedy club in Elmhurst.
His comedy influences included shows like Monty Python’s Flying Circus because of their mix of clever humor and funny wordplay.
He also looked up to folks like Steve Dahl, SCTV, Steve Martin, Woody Allen, The Credibility Gap, and Bob and Ray. These were the people who inspired him to make people laugh and start his fantastic comedy career.
Bob Odenkirk’s Career in Writing & Acting
Before Bob Odenkirk became an actor, he was a writer. He started writing for the TV show “Saturday Night Live” (SNL) from 1987 to 1991.
He teamed up with his friends to create hilarious sketches. You might have heard of the “Matt Foley, Motivational Speaker” sketch that he wrote for Chris Farley on SNL. It became a classic!
But Bob did not stop there. He left SNL to go to Los Angeles, where he acted and wrote for other TV shows. In 1992, he joined “The Ben Stiller Show” and even won an award for his writing.
He also worked with Conan O’Brien, and later, he teamed up with his buddy David Cross to create “Mr. Show with Bob and David.” It was a super funny TV series, but not everyone knew about it because it was on special cable, not regular TV.
Bob and David also made a movie called “Run, Ronnie, Run,” but they weren’t happy with how it turned out because the studio changed it.
Bob Odenkirk has done a lot in the world of TV and movies. He came up with ideas for TV shows like “The Big Wide World of Carl Laemke” and “David’s Situation,” but unfortunately, they didn’t become shows.

He even directed a movie called “Melvin Goes to Dinner,” and people liked it. He also worked with Tim Heidecker and Eric Wareheim on funny TV shows for Adult Swim.
You might have seen him in small parts on TV shows like “Everybody Loves Raymond” and “Curb Your Enthusiasm.” Fun fact: He almost played Michael Scott on “The Office,” but instead, he was in the show’s last season.
Bob also tried his hand at directing movies like “Let’s Go to Prison” and “The Brothers Solomon,” but they didn’t do very well.
In 2009, he joined the TV series “Breaking Bad” as a lawyer named Saul Goodman. His role was originally supposed to be short, but people loved him so much that he stayed on the show until the end.
Bob worked on different projects like “Let’s Do This!” for Adult Swim and the comedy show “The Birthday Boys.” He also played Police Chief Bill Oswalt in “Fargo” and was in “Tim & Eric’s Bedtime Stories” on Adult Swim.
After “Breaking Bad,” Bob Odenkirk got even bigger roles in famous movies like “Incredibles 2,” “Little Women,” “The Post,” “The Disaster Artist,” “The Spectacular Now,” and “Nebraska.”
Who is Bob Odenkirk’s Wife?
Bob Odenkirk tied the knot with his wife Naomi Yomtov back in 1997. They have two kids together, a son named Nate Odenkirk and a daughter named Erin Odenkirk.

Bob Odenkirk’s Heart Attack
On July 27, 2021, Bob Odenkirk had a health scare. He had what he called a “small heart attack” while working on the set of the TV show “Better Call Saul” in Albuquerque. It was a really scary moment for him.
Thankfully, just three days later, on July 30, Bob told everyone that he was going to be okay and come back soon. That’s a relief!
Later, in 2022, Bob shared more about what happened. He had to get two stents put into his heart arteries because they were getting clogged with gunk.
He had known about this problem since 2018. It turns out his heart trouble was more serious than he thought.
His heart even stopped beating, and doctors had to use special machines to get it started again. That must have been really tough, but he’s a fighter, and he’s doing better now.
