Josh

It was a little difficult not to feel incredibly pissed off.

There was definitely something I was missing – although Pierre was evidently not grasping it either, which almost made my day. Almost – but Charlie knew, and it seemed centered around Astrid, so that made my day gloomy. There was no way I was getting it out of Charlie…Even though he had said he wanted to talk after the little fiasco at the nightclub, he still hadn’t opened his mouth to spill the next morning, when we sat in the sitting room after breakfast.

Typical.

Pierre was sitting in a straight-backed wooden chair, looking at something on his phone and scrolling as he did so. Charlie was sprawled on the couch, lying with his arms behind his head, staring up at the ceiling. I paced, unable to help myself. There was an underlying sense of tension filling the room as we waited for Astrid to get out of the shower.

“Why are we always waiting for her?” Pierre asked presently, not even looking up from whatever was fascinating him on his phone

Charlie shot him a dirty look – which he missed – and I sighed. “Who knows?” I answered, even though I knew it had been rhetorical. “Maybe because she’s a girl?”

“Sexist.”

I looked up. Oh, crap, just my luck: trust Astrid to walk in just as I’m insulting her – albeit mildly. She narrowed her dark eyes at me, folding her arms across her chest as she glared at me. “Maybe because it’s so freaking early?”

“It’s only five-thirty,” Pierre said, grinning at her.

“In the freaking morning!”

“Besides,” he continued smoothly, “we had to get up early to actually take action today.”

Astrid looked like she was struggling for a counterargument, still glaring murderously at me. “Well, you can’t blame me for taking so long – you were the one who took a long time, and maybe I had important stuff to do!”

“Yeah, that’s it,” I agreed, grinning at her. “Important stuff – absolutely right.”

Charlie rolled his eyes, not even turning to look at her. “Like what – brushing your hair?”

Astrid looked at him with a strange expression on her face – almost as if she was trying to remember something. Surprisingly, she didn’t seem to have a comeback to that, merely struggling with something that was evidently on the tip of her tongue, an uncertain look on her face.

Charlie chose this moment to sit up, swinging his feet over the side of the couch to meet the ground. His grey eyes met Astrid’s for a long moment, long enough for me to know that he wasn’t just checking her out but actually silently communicating with her. I frowned at this – what could they be saying that they didn’t want us to hear?
