Todd Boehly is said to have played an ‘instrumental’ role in securing Romelu Lukaku’s departure from Chelsea this summer, according to reports.
Lukaku is set to make a return to Inter Milan before the start of the new season, despite signing for a second stint at the Blues last summer for a club record fee of around £97.5 million.
The Belgian international scored just 15 goals in 44 appearances for Chelsea last season, with the striker struggling for form in front of goal for much of the campaign.
During an interview with Sky Italia in December, he revealed that he was unhappy with his situation at Stamford Bridge and expressed his desire to go back to Inter at some point in his career.
With the transfer window now open, it looks as though the 29-year-old will soon be able to get his wish.
As reported by the Daily Mirror, Chelsea co-owner Boehly is believed to have been ‘instrumental’ in helping to secure the player’s exit from the club this summer.
The American businessman, who recently completed the takeover of the World Champions alongside Clearlake Capital, was initially concerned about letting Lukaku depart the club for a second time in his career, having originally left back in 2014.
However he was informed that keeping him at the club would be a ‘bigger mistake’, especially if he is not in Thomas Tuchel’s plans going forward.
Lukaku is confident that his return to Inter could be completed within the next two weeks, meaning he will join in time for their pre-season schedule.
A traditional loan from Stamford Bridge to the San Siro was suggested at first, but there is belief that this may not be likely and the Blues would prefer a swap deal.
The Belgian international won the Serie A title at Inter before re-signing for Chelsea last summer, and his move could give the World Champions the chance to make a move for one of their transfer targets.
Raheem Sterling is one of the names that the Blues have on their list, and they would only look to sign him once Lukaku has left the club.
Chelsea have confidence that they will be able to sign the 27-year-old winger this summer, who has just completed his seventh season at Manchester City.
Such a move would see him play for a third Premier League side in his career, having initially made his breakthrough at Liverpool.
