Matheus Nunes says his new manager and teammates were a huge influence in his move to Wolverhampton Wanderers, after completing his £38m switch from Sporting.

It is a club record transfer for Wolves, spending big on the 23-year-old Portugal international and signing him up to a five-year deal.

The midfielder had been touted as a possible signing for Liverpool and Chelsea this summer, with the Brazilian-born star already playing in the Champions League for Sporting and expected to remain in that competition.

However, Nunes has ended up at Molineux, and it is largely thanks to the Portuguese contingent at Wolves, with plenty of his compatriots convincing him to join them.

‘I think the club itself [convinced him] and also I spoke to some of my teammates because I play with them for the national team,’ Nunes said. ‘The coach as well, he really wanted me, and I wanted to play in the Premier League. I think it’s the right next step for me and I’m very happy to be here.

‘Ruben [Neves], [Joao] Moutinho, I spoke to all of them and asked them stuff, and they all said great stuff about the club – [Jose] Sa as well, so I’m glad to be here.

‘For sure. I’ve wanted to come here for a long time now. This is the best league in the world for sure and, like I said, it’s the best step for me and I’m ready.

‘I wanted to know what the mister [manager] expects from me, and it’s good to know he has a lot of expectations on me, that he believes in me, and that gives me the will to work hard and prove that he’s right as well.’

Nunes also revealed that he has a connection to England, with his stepdad hailing from the North East.

‘My stepdad is actually from Sunderland,’ he said. ‘So I learned English with him since I was a little kid, and in school as well, school taught me a lot, and I learned from engaging, and when you learn as a kid, it’s much easier.’

Nunes has already played two Primeira Liga matches this season so will be available to play very soon for his new side, although he has confirmed that he cannot play at Spurs on Saturday, saying: ‘I could play tomorrow already, but I can’t because the game is Saturday, but I’m looking forward to it.’
