Erik ten Hag’s men completed a memorable comeback late on at Old Trafford. Jack Grealish had opened the scoring for the visitors, before a quick-fire double from Bruno Fernandes and Rashford secured three valuable points for United.

But there was worry that Rashford may not have been able to complete the game after going down holding his hip in the first half.

Speaking to BT Sport post-match, Rashford said that he forced himself to play on despite the pain as this was a huge occasion.

“Just a little knock but in games like this you have to try and push through,” he said.

“Thankfully I managed to do that, obviously scoring the goal at the end and winning the game and that’s what we set out to do. This game, obviously, it’s a bit special, but we’re happy to get the three points and continue winning at Old Trafford.”

Rashford’s winner was assisted by Alejandro Garnacho, whose pace and trickery helped change the game against a tired City defence, and the England international was full of praise for his teenage teammate.

“It’s a change of dynamics. I think I’ve said this many times before but the options we’ve got coming off the bench, even when we’ve had injuries at times and everyone’s played out of position – Bruno played out of position today – as you can see everyone puts in a shift. When you have players like Garno, young and hungry, full of talent and ready to make a difference, anything’s possible,” Rashford added.
