Paris Saint-Germain manager Christophe Galtier is considering dropping one of Lionel Messi, Neymar, or Kylian Mbappe on the bench for a forward more willing to press and hold shape, according to L’Equipe.
Galtier wants to dump the 3-4-3 formation that accommodates Messi, Mbappe, and Neymar, MMN, despite his team recording success playing that way.
Now, the Frenchman feels the impact of the formation has lessened in recent weeks, as seen during their Champions League win against Maccabi Haifa on Wednesday.
“Christophe Galtier does not rule out the possibility of switching to a 3 man midfield to get better control,” the newspaper said.
It added that “Galtier could either move to a 4-3-3 formation OR play 3 midfielders in the 3-5-2 system, which would mean a member of the “MNM” could be sacrficed.”
Their game against Maccabi Haifa was tough as the Ligue 1 champions were 1-0 down in Israel before eventually finding their way through to win 3-1.
And their manager believes teams have begun to figure his tactics out and is looking for ways to switch things up.
The 56-year-old could soon switch to a four-man defense, which would demand a more defensive mindset from his attacking players.
Mbappe, Neymar and Messi hardly help in defence and the manager does not want to impose restrictions on the iconic trio.
Galtier could also add an extra central midfielder to aid Vitinha and Marco Verratti, given that his side could easily be overrun in the center of the park.
Neymar is said to be in a frosty relationship with Mbappe and was reportedly put up for sale over summer, and was linked with a move to Chelsea.
But the Brazilian has discovered his feet under Galtier and scored one of the three goals in PSG’s comeback win over Maccabi Haifa. Messi put the Ligue 1 side in front and created the second goal for Mbappe, while Neymar scored the third to ensure they secured the three points.
