Over 400 players have registered for the 2022 India Cup Golf tournament, which tees off at the Ikoyi Club, Golf Section, today.
Organised by Indian Golfers Foundation (IGF), the tournament will begin with the club’s caddies and professionals taking to the course, while ladies will take their turn tomorrow.
According to a member of the organising committee, Keshab Vaswani, Ikoyi Club is already abuzz with the players for the weeklong event.
He said the “IGF acknowledges with deep gratitude the steadfast commitment of our sponsors who have stood firmly with us even in these trying economic conditions.
“They identify with the ideals of the IGF in hosting the event as a channel to foster the growing relationship between the Indian and international communities with their Nigerian counterparts.
“The atmosphere created at the event is one of key interest to us and that is why this event has gone on for so long.”
Backed by some big African companies, including Zenith Bank, 7Up Bottling Company, and Rwandair, who are the premium sponsors, amongst others, the final events are scheduled for Friday. These include competitions for veteran members of Ikoyi Club, sponsors and guests, who will play for prizes.
On Saturday, will see the main draw (men’s tournament), where the gentlemen golfers will take on the India Cup challenge.
The event will be an 18-hole stoke play, whose eventual winner will be determined by lowest gross score and rewarded with a business class return ticket, courtesy of Rwandair to Kigali. There will also be prizes for runner up as well as net score categories.
According to the organisers, the spectrum of hospitality and entertainment offerings that every participant will be treated to is the hallmark of the event.
A special Hole in One prize of a Kia Sonet vehicle awaits the lucky golfer who can achieve this feat, Vaswani said.
“We have deliberately designed the event to be more of a celebration of the different communities represented than a golf competition. The India Cup has always been like that, and that is why everyone wants to be part of it,” he said.
The closing ceremony will be a presentation dinner, where all participants will be feted to dinner and an Indian-inspired evening.
