England Euro 2022 hero Jill Scott retires at 35

Jill Scott has announced her retirement from football at the age of 35 following England’s Euro 2022 triumph this summer.

The news comes after the Lionesses’ record goalscorer Ellen White, 33, retired on Monday.

Scott, who has been capped 161 times by her country, has played in 10 major tournaments including eight for England and two for Team GB.

Scott announced her retirement on Twitter on Tuesday, saying: ‘Right, we’re not crying. I promised myself. I’m retiring from football. And I’m leaving with a gold medal swinging from my neck.’

She came off the bench in the Euros final and played a crucial role in extra-time as the Lionesses beat Germany 2-1.

She was part of the Lionesses team that was beaten 6-2 by Germany in 2009, when women’s footballers were still part-time.

In that same year Scott was one of the first England players to be awarded a central contract of £16,000 per year, which permitted up to 24 hours a week of part-time work.

Scott’s 18-year career started with hometown club Sunderland before a move to Everton in 2006.

The midfielder signed her first professional contract with Manchester City in 2013 and won every domestic honour including a WSL title, three Continental League Cups and three FA Cups. During her time at City she had two loan spells with Everton and Aston Villa.
