Arsenal end 37-year Arsene Wenger record in win over Bournemouth

A remarkable run came to an end in Arsenal’s 3-2 win over Bournemouth, with their starting XI not consisting of a single player that has or will ever be managed by Arsene Wenger.

Wenger was in charge of the Gunners from 1996 to 2018 and had a bigger impact on the club than anyone else in their history, making it one of the world’s biggest and best in every area, from on-pitch performances to facilities.

His legacy lived on after he left through a number of players that he had brought into the team, but that legacy is now starting to fade.

The match against Bournemouth was the first one since January of 1986 in which there wasn’t a single player in the Arsenal starting XI that had or ever would play under the Frenchman.

Such a landmark moment has been on the cards for a long time but has been delayed by Granit Xhaka, who was signed by Wenger and has been a stalwart in Mikel Arteta’s side this season.

The Spaniard opted to drop the midfielder for the Bournemouth game, replacing him with Fabio Vieira, bringing the run to an end.

Wenger’s work did still have a big impact on the game though with Reiss Nelson, one of the last talents he brought through the youth academy, scoring the winning goal with the last kick of the game.

Thanks to that goal, the club is still on track to win the Premier League for the first time since the former manager and his Invincibles did so back in 2004, leading Manchester City by three points.
