Funso Doherty, the 2023 gubernatorial candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), in Lagos State has opened up on why he decided to decamp to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Funso Doherty said Nigeria’s political setting put the country’s democracy into a two-party system of All Progressives Congress (APC) and the PDP.

Speaking to Silverbird TV on Tuesday, Doherty said he wanted to challenge the Lagos political environment through a unified opposition.

He said, “The decision to leave the ADC for the PDP is essentially the next phase in our political journey. I started out in the ADC, it was my first outing in the last elections and I ran for governorship, as you know, and that gave people the opportunity to see me, see my candidacy and so on.

“One of the things that you will know, as most Nigerians do, in the Nigerian setting, the Nigerian Democratic setting, as with many other democracies where they practice this first-past-the-post political system, it tends to gravitate towards large parties and ultimately moves towards almost a two-party system, which is what is in America where you have the Democrats and Republicans, the UK Labor and Conservative and generally those systems tend to tend in that direction and we think that that will continue to be the case.

“If you want to challenge the incumbent in our environment, you need to be part of a large unified opposition and we think that this is a step in that direction and we want to be a part of bringing that together”
