The senate has confirmed 17 nominees as commissioners of the National Population Commission (NPC).
President Bola Tinubu had asked the upper legislative chamber to screen and confirm 19 nominees as NPC commissioners.
However, only 17 out of the 19 nominees appeared before the committee on national identity card and population.
While presenting a report for the consideration of his colleagues on Wednesday, Abdul Ningi, chairman of the committee, said the nominees representing Ogun and Ondo states did not appear because of “recent political developments in their states”.
Ningi said those who appeared before the committee met the requirements for confirmation.
Thereafter, the upper legislative chamber went into the “committee of the whole” where it confirmed the nominees after votes.
The 17 confirmed nominees are Emmanuel Eke (Abia); Clifford Zirra (Adamawa); Chidi Ezeoke (Anambra); Isa Buratal (Borno); Alex Ukam (Cross River); Blessyn Brume-Maguha (Delta) and Jeremiah Ogbonna Nwankwegu (Ebonyi).
Others are Tony Alyejina (Edo); Ejike Ezeh (Enugu); Abubakar Damburam (Gombe); Uba Nnabue (Imo); Sa’adatu Garba (Kaduna); Aminu Ibrahim Tsanyawa (Kano); Yori Afolabii (Kogi); Mary Afan (Plateau); Saany Sale (Taraba) and Ogiri Henry (Rivers).
