Jerry Bruckheimer says it will “be a while” before Top Gun 3 gets made.
Speaking with Deadline, Bruckheimer was asked if there was any update regarding the third movie in the Top Gun franchise.
“We’ve got some interesting ideas we’ve talked to Tom Cruise about, but we don’t have a script yet,” he answered. “It will be a while.”
In January 2024, Variety reported that Top Gun 3 was in the works with Top Gun: Maverick writer Ehren Kruger working on the script. Joseph Kosinski may return to direct the movie, though this has not been confirmed at this time.
Bruckheimer told ScreenRant in March 2024 that Tom Cruise will return as Captain Pete “Maverick” Mitchell in Top Gun 3.
“It will be Tom Cruise,” he said. “Tom is amazing. We spent time with him. We have a story. Joe Kosinski had a wonderful story idea for it, and he [Cruise] said I really like that, so we’re developing it. But you never know when it’s going to get made because Tom is so busy. He’s doing Mission: Impossible right now, he’s got a picture after it. Hopefully, we’ll get a screenplay that he loves, and we’ll be back in the air again.”
Miles Teller and Glen Powell are also reportedly expected to return for Top Gun 3.
The first Top Gun movie was directed by Tony Scott. Along with Cruise, it starred Val Kilmer as Tom “Iceman” Kazansky, Kelly McGillis as Charlotte “Charlie” Blackwood, Anthony Edwards as Nick “Goose” Bradshaw, and Meg Ryan as Carole Bradshaw.
Directed by Kosinski, Top Gun: Maverick arrived in United States theaters in May 2022. Adding Teller, Powell, and Jennifer Connelly to the cast, Top Gun: Maverick was a huge financial success for Paramount, bringing in approximately $1.496 billion at the global box office off an estimated $170-177 million budget. It was nominated for Best Picture at the Academy Awards, among several other accolades.
