Fresh from the successful opening for Twisters, Glen Powell has revealed a small update on the production of Top Gun 3.
Powell was promoting Twisters alongside co-star Daisy Edgar-Jones on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, and the pair were asked if we would get a continuation of Jones’ Normal People or a Top Gun 3 first.
Powell teased fans of the high-flying series with a casual, “I mean, I have a date, ” but he gave a stern, “Absolutely not, ” when asked if he would share any more information.
In recent weeks, Powell has been hinting at a third Top Gun movie. On the Today show, he said it would be ”happening at some point,” and he and Tom Cruise expressed a desire to work together again. Cruise made a surprise appearance at the premiere for Twisters, but Powell claims they didn’t speak about Top Gun 3 there.
Top Gun: Maverick is where Glen Powell began his current ascent to megastardom. The 2022 follow-up to the 1986 movie by Tony Scott was directed by Joseph Kosinski (Tron Legacy, Oblivion, F1). It sees Cruise’s Pete ”Maverick” Mitchell attempting to stay in the air as a pilot while age catches up to him. He then gets to train a new batch of TOP GUN graduates for a specialized mission that goes beyond what any pilot has done before. Powell starred in the movie as Lt. Jake ”Hangman” Seresin.
Since that film, Powell has led three quite different projects to success. The romcom Anyone But You with Sydney Sweeney was a hit, and there was much acclaim for his role in the steamy dark comedy Hit Man by Richard Linklater earlier this year. Now, he’s blowing through the box office once more as the lead in Twisters, a follow-up to the 1996 movie Twister starring Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt.
Next for Powell is a reimagining of The Running Man, directed by Edgar Wright.
