Warner Bros. and Fathom Events have officially announced The Matrix theatrical rerelease dates for the upcoming limited screenings of The Wachowski sisters’ iconic 1999 action sci-fi movie.
“The film explores a dystopian world in which humans are used as an energy source for machines,” reads the synopsis. “‘Have you ever had a dream that you were so sure was real? What if you were unable to wake from that dream? How would you know the difference between the dream world and the real world?’ When a beautiful stranger leads computer hacker Neo to a forbidding underworld, he discovers the shocking truth–the life he knows is the elaborate deception of an evil cyber-intelligence. Neo joins legendary and dangerous rebel warrior Morpheus in the battle to destroy the illusion enslaving humanity.”
To celebrate its 25th anniversary, The Matrix will be heading back to theaters nationwide on Thursday, September 19, and Sunday, September 22. Tickets for the special screenings are available at Fathom Events, or at participating theater box offices.
In addition, Fathom screenings will also include exclusive special legacy featurette, which reflects on the film’s monumental impact. It features The Matrix Resurrections star Jessica Henwick as she discusses the influential cyberthriller that thrust moviemaking into an astonishing new dimension, while also sharing some never-before-seen personal reflections on the film.
The 1999 sci-fi classic was written and directed by sisters Lana and Lilly Wachowski. The film was led by Keanu Reeves as Neo, Carrie-Anne Moss as Trinity, Laurence Fishburne as Morpheus, Hugo Weaving as Agent Smith, Joe Pantoliano as Cypher, and more. Due to its critical and commercial success, it was followed by three more sequels, including The Matrix Reloaded, The Matrix Revolutions and The Matrix Resurrections. The franchise currently has a combined worldwide gross of over $1.7 billion at the box office.
