What is Lee Daniels’ The Deliverance about?

“Ebony Jackson, a struggling single mother fighting her personal demons, moves her family into a new home for a fresh start,” the synopsis reads. “But when strange occurrences inside the home raise the suspicions of Child Protective Services and threaten to tear the family apart, Ebony soon finds herself locked in a battle for her life and the souls of her children. Inspired by a true story, The Deliverance is directed by Academy Award nominee Lee Daniels and stars Andra Day, Glenn Close, Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, and Mo’Nique in a genre-defying take on darkness, possession, and finding a higher power.”

The Deliverance also stars Anthony B. Jenkins, Miss Lawrence, Demi Singleton, Tasha Smith, Omar Epps, and Caleb McLaughlin. David Coggeshall and Elijah Bynum wrote the screenplay for The Deliverance, while Daniels, Tucker Tooley, Pamela Oas Williams, Jackson Nguyen, and Todd Crites serve as producers.

Executive producers include Jackie Shenoo, Hilary Shor, Greg Renker, and Gregoire Gensollen.

Daniels is known for making 2005’s Shadowboxer, 2009’s Precious, 2012’s The Paperboy, and 2013’s Lee Daniels’ The Butler. Prior to The Deliverance, his most recent film was 2021’s The United States vs. Billie Holiday. Day, who played Billie Holiday in the film, was nominated for Best Actress at the Academy Awards for her performance.
