With The Boys Season 5 confirmed to be wrapping up the series, showrunner Eric Kripke has discussed how he has planned the ending. He has teased that the show could stun viewers while also satisfying them on an emotional level.
A recent report on The Boys revealed that it almost became a movie trilogy directed by Adam McKay before Amazon Prime Video launched it as a series. The same report also included Eric Kripke’s comments on how he thinks Season 5 will come to an end.
In Rolling Stone’s report, Kripke revealed that he is working on an ending that will leave fans “emotionally satisfied” and “surprised” at the same time. He said:
“I have an ending in mind, I’ll say that. I want it to be satisfying, right? I mean, you could count the great series finales on one hand. So it’s a real hard target. And I would want it to be emotionally satisfying but also surprising in how I’m delivering it.”
Addressing whether the series will have a happy ending, Kripke added:
“Anything worth having is worth fighting for. When something good in the show happens, I always ask, ‘What’s the cost?’”
Elaborating further on the ending, Kripke said that he has overseen “a moral universe where when you choose love, family, and mercy, good things happen to you.” But, according to him, if you go for hate and revenge, “that causes as much harm to you as it does to the person you’re trying to enact vengeance on.”
The Boys Season 4 is currently dialing up the tension with Homelander continuing to grow erratic. Billy Butcher on the other hand is getting closer to his demise. Victoria Neuman is also extremely close to stepping into the Oval Office. How these pieces fall into place for the “satisfying” ending to The Boys Season 5 remains to be seen.
The first four episodes of The Boys Season 4 are currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
