Tell Me Lies Creator Gives Disappointing Update on Tom Ellis’ Oliver & Teases Season 3 Time Jump

Tell Me Lies creator and showrunner Meaghan Oppenheimer gave a disappointing update on the future of Tom Ellis‘ Oliver as the series ended its sophomore run. Introduced in Season 2, the character quickly became a fan favorite. Oppenheimer also hinted that Season 3, which Hulu hasn’t officially greenlit yet, might have a time jump.

Meaghan Oppenheimer says Tom Ellis’ Oliver unlikely to return in Tell Me Lies Season 3

Oppenheimer said in a new interview that Tom Ellis is unlikely to return as Oliver in the prospective Tell Me Lies Season 3.

Oliver is a professor at Baird College, a fictional school in Upstate New York that serves as the primary setting for the series. His wife is Marianne (Gabriella Pession), an English professor also teaching at Baird. In the second season, Oliver has an affair with Catherine Missal’s Bree.

When asked if the Lucifer star would stick around for more chapters of the show, Oppenheimer told Variety, “I don’t think so.” “I think Tom was just wanting to do one season. I think that we wrapped up his storyline in a way that really worked for me. I don’t know where else we would go after that with him. I think we could bring Marianne back, maybe. There’s a lot more story to tell with her. But I think we kind of learned that Oliver is so broken and hollow by the end of this season that I’m ready for Bree to be done with him,” she added.

Oppenheimer hints Tell Me Lies Season 3 will have a time jump

In the same interview, Oppenheimer teased that “there would probably be a time jump” in the third season.

Just like the inaugural chapter, Tell Me Lies Season 2 unfolds in two separate timelines, with one taking place in 2008 and the other in 2015. Oppenheimer mentioned that while there might still be some plot threads from 2008 left to be explored in Season 3, she thinks “it would be a little bit shifted in the sense that there will probably be more 2015 than 2008.” The main characters are in college in the 2008 timeline and reunite in the 2015 one. Accordingly, the time jump, if it happens, will likely be from 2008 and not 2015.
