It may be ten movies deep, but the Saw franchise can still do surprising things. But it’s not a grisly murder trap that has eyebrows raised. Saw X is currently getting the best reviews the series has seen.
Yes, the initial glut of critics reviews have been so positive that Saw X is the first entry in the series to be certified ”Fresh” on Rotten Tomatoes. You’d think that’s perhaps faint praise, but its 84% score is far higher than the original movie’s 50% score.
There’s a common feeling in many of the 37 reviews for the movie so far. Saw X is indeed the best the series has been since James Wan’s original.
The movie takes place between the events of the first and second entries, and sees John Kramer, aka Jigsaw (Tobin Bell), trying to get medical help in Mexico for his terminal cancer. Of course, it can’t be as simple as that; the doctors are con artists. So Jigsaw breaks out the trap-making kit and seeks revenge.
Written by Peter Goldfinger and Josh Stolberg, Saw X is directed by Kevin Greutert and produced by Mark Burg and Oren Koules. Along with Bell, the movie stars Shawnee Smith, Synnøve Macody Lund, Steven Brand, Michael Beach, and Renata Vaca.
Saw X is in theaters from today.
