A sequel to 2022’s Samaritan is in the works at Amazon MGM Studios with Sylvester Stallone set to return, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The sequel to the superhero film will see Stallone return as a producer (as part of his Balboa Productions) and to star in the film. Prior to the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike, Stallone reached a deal to return, THR’s report notes.
The first film’s writer, Bragi F. Schut, is also set to return to write the sequel. It’s unclear as of now if director Julius Avery will be returning, however.
Originally released in 2022 as a Prime Video exclusive, the film was a surprise hit for Amazon. According to THR, the film was the number-one film on Prime Video for three consecutive weeks following its release.
“In the film, thirteen-year-old Sam Cleary suspects that his mysterious and reclusive neighbor Mr. Smith is actually a legend hiding in plain sight,” reads the synopsis. “Twenty years ago, Granite City’s super-powered vigilante, Samaritan, was reported dead after a fiery warehouse battle with his rival, Nemesis. Most believe Samaritan perished in the fire, but some in the city, like Sam, have hope that he is still alive. With crime on the rise and the city on the brink of chaos, Sam makes it his mission to coax his neighbor out of hiding to save the city from ruin.”
Samaritan was produced by Stallone and Braden Aftergood, with Scut, David Kern, Adam Rosenberg, and Guy Riedel serving as executive producers
