Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy has spoken a bit about the return of Daisy Ridley’s Rey in an upcoming Star Wars movie. Announced at the recent Star Wars Celebration, the movie will take place after The Rise of Skywalker and will feature Rey as the lead protagonist.

Kennedy spoke with EW about what sort of story the new Ridley-led Star Wars film may have and the reasoning for this return to the mainline movies.

“As we move into the future space — this story is about 15 years outside of The Rise of Skywalker — obviously we realized post-war, post–First Order rise of the New Jedi Order, we left Episode 9 with Rey making a commitment to Luke Skywalker that she would rebuild the Jedi order,” Kennedy explained.

“And so here we are — we’re ready to do that. And it took a lot of discussion because obviously we’ve been developing stories in different spaces, and television has been a big focus of our attention right now. But there’s still so much interest in what happens after The Rise of Skywalker. So we’re excited to be doing that.”

The untitled Star Wars movie is being directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy (Ms. Marvel) and written by Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight. It will star Daisy Ridley as Rey, who last appeared in Star Wars: The Rise of the Skywalker, which she described as her favorite filming experience.

Quite a few Star Wars projects are currently on the horizon, including the Disney+ series Ahsoka, The Acolyte, and Skeleton Crew. The third season of The Mandalorian is currently releasing weekly on the streaming platform, while the video game Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is nearing its April 28 release date.ac
