The official One Life trailer for See-Saw Films’ upcoming biographical drama has been released, starring Oscar winner Anthony Hopkins and Johnny Flynn as Sir Nicholas Winton, the man responsible for saving hundreds of Jewish children during World War II. The film will have its world premiere this Saturday, September 9 at the Toronto International Film Festival. It will then be followed by its theatrical release on January 1, 2024.

The video also teases the film’s recreation of an emotional moment from a BBC show, where Winton was able to finally meet some of the children he rescued several decades later. This heartwarming moment actually went viral online years after it aired, with the YouTube clip from the special garnering 41 million views as of today.

What to expect in One Life?

“The film tells the true story of Sir Nicholas ‘Nicky’ Winton, a young London broker played by Hopkins, who, in the months leading up to World War II, rescued 669 children from the Nazis. Nicky visited Prague in December 1938 and found families who had fled the rise of the Nazis in Germany and Austria, living in desperate conditions with little or no shelter and food, and under threat of Nazi invasion. He immediately realized it was a race against time. How many children could he and the team rescue before the borders closed?” reads the synopsis.

“Fifty years later, it’s 1988 and Nicky lives haunted by the fate of the children he wasn’t able to bring to safety in England; always blaming himself for not doing more. It’s not until a live BBC television show, That’s Life!, surprises him by introducing him to some surviving children – now adults – that he finally begins to come to terms with the guilt and grief he had carried for five decades.”

One Life is directed by James Hawkes from a screenplay written by Lucinda Coxon and Nick Drake. Joining Hopkins and Flynn are Helena Bonham Carter as Babi Winton, Lena Olin as Grete Winton, Jonathan Pryce as Martin Blake, Samantha Spiro as Esther Rantzen, Alex Sharp as Trevor Chadwick, Romola Garai as Doreen Warriner, and more.

The film is executive produced by Simon Gillis, Maria Logan, Norman Merry, and Anne Sheehan. Producers are Guy Heeley, Mark Hubbard, Joana Laurie, and Emile Sherman.
