Monster High Movie in Development at Universal and Mattel

Mattel Films has officially announced its partnership with Universal Pictures for the development of a live-action Monster High movie, with Oscar winner Akiva Goldsman (A Beautiful Mind, Constantine) signing on to produce the project.

The film will be based on Mattel’s popular toyline of fashion dolls imagined as the teen children of legendary classic monsters such as Dracula and Frankenstein. Besides the Monster High movie, Goldsman is also currently serving as one of the producers on Tom Hanks’ Major Matt Mason movie.

What did Mattel say about the Monster High movie?

“Monster High helps fans discover the great beauty in being true to yourself and celebrates the unique sensibilities at the core of who we are as individuals,” Mattel Films boss Robbie Brenner said in a statement (via The Hollywood Reporter). “We’re proud to partner with Universal Pictures and the brilliant Akiva Goldsman to usher this important message to audiences worldwide.”

The Monster High movie has no director, writer, or cast attached to it yet. Brenner is also producing the project, with Kevin McKeon and Arturo Thur De Koos overseeing for Mattel. Meanwhile, Weed Road’s Greg Lessans and Universal’s Lexi Barta and Jacqueline Garelle have also been tapped to oversee the movie in behalf of their respective companies.

The popular toyline was first introduced in 2010 by toy designer Garrett Sander. It immediately became a beloved expansive universe rich with inclusive storytelling and doll play, fostering a fandom that spans generations. Prior to receiving a live-action movie adaptation, Monster High was first adapted into multiple animated films and TV series.
