Knull Isn’t Venom 3’s Main Villain, Says Director

Despite being featured prominently throughout its marketing, Venom: The Last Dance‘s director says that Knull won’t be the film’s actual main villain, and isn’t just a one-and-done.

Speaking to IGN, director and co-writer Kelly Marcel said that she and those behind the upcoming movie understand fully how important the character Knull is to Venom. For that reason, she says “This is just the beginning” when it comes to the iconic god.

What did Venom 3’s director say about Knull?

“We were always aware of Knull, but knew that we needed to lay the foundation of the Venom character, and his relationship with Eddie, before introducing him. This is just the beginning for Knull,” Marcel said.

“We’re in spoiler territory now and we hope some of the fun of watching this movie is not knowing what will happen, but trust me, we know full well how important Knull is to the fans, so just as we laid a foundation for Venom, we hope we are doing the same for Knull,” continued Marcel. “The King in Black is way too powerful for ‘one and done.’”

As for what fans can expect from Knull in the movie, Marcel says that the movie just touches on “the beginnings of his story” and is more about him being a constant, lurking threat behind the scenes.

“This film introduces Knull, but it just touches the beginnings of his story. Marvel’s greatest film villains are developed over time,” Marcel said. “Here, Knull is the threat lurking behind the danger that tests the absolute limits of Eddie and Venom’s partnership — but it’s their relationship that remains the heart of this story.”

Venom: The Last Dance sees Tom Hardy returning to the film franchise to reprise his role as Eddie Brock. Alongside him, the upcoming film also stars Chiwetel Ejiofor, Juno Temple, Rhys Ifans, Peggy Lu, Alanna Ubach, and Stephen Graham.

The Last Dance marks the feature directorial debut of Marcel, who wrote screenplays for the first two films. The third installment will once again feature the Mad Max: Fury Road star in his dual role as Eddie Brock and the titular symbiote.

Venom: The Last Dance is set to release in theaters on October 25, 2024.
