Macy will join a film that already features the likes of Owen Teague, Freya Allen, and Peter Macon in the Wes Ball-directed film. It’s unknown who Macy will be playing, however, with casting still ongoing and information about the project scarce as is.

The latest entry in the Planet of the Apes franchise will stem from a screenplay written by Josh Friedman, Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver, and Patrick Aison. The film is produced by Joe Hartwick Jr., Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver, and Jason Reed, and will introduce a new adventure in the long-running franchise.

Macy is perhaps best known for his starring roles in films like Fargo, Air Force One, Boogie Nights, Magnolia, and Jurassic Park III, just to name a few. He’s also starred in several hit television series, most notably his decade-long tenure as Frank Gallagher in the hit Showtime series Shameless. Up next for Macy will be 2023’s romantic comedy film Maybe I Do.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes will be written by Josh Friedman, Rick Jaffa, and Amanda Silver, the latter of whom was also a writer for Rise of the Planet of the Apes. The film will be produced by Patrick Aison, Joe Hartwick Jr., Jaffa, Silver, and Jason Reed.

“Planet of the Apes is one of the most iconic and storied science fiction franchises in film history, as well as being an indelible part of our studio’s legacy,” said 20th Century Studios president Steve Asbell. “With Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, we are privileged to continue the series’ tradition of imaginative, thought-provoking cinema, and we can’t wait to share Wes’ extraordinary vision for this new chapter with audiences in 2024.”

The last film in the Planet of the Apes series, 2017’s War for the Planet of the Apes, saw director Matt Reeves’ Planet of the Apes reboot series come to a close and starred Andy Serkis, Woody Harrelson, and Steve Zahn. The film premiered to critical acclaim and made nearly $500 million at the box office. It earned nominations for Best Visual Effects and Best Special Visual Effects at the Academy Awards.
