Barbarians is the latest historical drama on Netflix, whisking us back to the days of the Roman empire. After finishing all 8 episodes, you may be wondering if this has been renewed or cancelled. Here’s what we know:
This time around, things are much more dynamic and intricately tied. After establishing the character relations last time out, Barbarians season 2 starts to push for deeper alliances and bigger betrayals, setting up for a dramatic and bloody finish to this season.
Before we reach that point though, the story picks up a year after the big fight in the forest. The Germanic tribes have formed a loose alliance under Ari’s banner but there are some that question his rule. Ari is married to Thusnelda, and they have a child together. Of course, this causes friction with Folkwin, given he was originally in a relationship with Thusnelda.
Meanwhile, the Roman Empire is intent on revenge following the battle. Tiberius and his son Germanicus amass their forces and try to enlist the help of a tribal leader called Marbod, who becomes an integral part of this story moving forward.
We have extensive coverage of Barbarians across the site, including full season reviews for both seasons and various recaps too
At the time of writing, Barbarians has not been renewed for a third season. Given the nature of the show’s content, that could well change if it does good numbers for Netflix.
Generally Netflix gauge numerous metrics before renewing a show, including how many people initially watch it and then looking at the drop-off rate. With some shows, cancellations or renewals happen quickly (ala. Squid Game, Bridgerton & Irregulars) Other times, it can take months before Netflix make a decision over a show’s future.
So far, Barbarians has had a mixed reaction from audiences and critics, with many pointing out the historical inaccuracies and story. However, the show is currently doing a great job hitting the top 10 on Netflix across various regions across the world.
Given the way this show is set up and that big cliffhanger at the end of season 2, we predict that this will be renewed for a third season. This is the perfect sort of show to binge through and very moreish too!
We’ll be sure to update this section with accurate details over the coming weeks and months when we know more!
Barely anything is known about season 3 at this point, given Netflix have not green-lit a sequel. However, there’s a very good case for another season to follow.
If this is renewed, Thusnelda’s fate will be left in the hands of the Gods, as she’s whisked across to Rome, while those left behind may have won the battle against the Romans but the war is far from over.
As mentioned above, we predict that this will be renewed but we’ll be sure to update this page in the future when more information is known though!
