Warner Bros. Television has officially tapped Emmy winning-producer Francesca Gardiner (Killing Eve) to become the showrunner and executive producer of the highly-anticipated Harry Potter HBO series. Gardiner won the job after several months of being the studio’s showrunner shortlist, which reportedly included The Devil’s Hour creator Tom Moran, and Teenage Bounty Hunters creator Kathleen Jordan.
In addition, acclaimed TV director Mark Mylod (Game of Thrones, The Last of Us) has also been enlisted to helm multiple episodes of the show. This marks Gardiner and Mylod’s second collaboration, after previously working together on the award-winning drama Succession.
HBO’s Harry Potter series will be written by Gardiner, who is executive producing alongside Mylod, J.K. Rowling, Neil Blair, Ruth Kenley-Letts, and long-time Harry Potter franchise producer David Heyman. It is a production by HBO in association with Brontë Film and TV and Warner Bros. Television.
The project is described as a “decade-long” project with each season expected to adapt one book in Rowling’s acclaimed book series, which consists of The Philosopher’s Stone, Chamber of Secrets, Prisoner of Azkaban, Goblet of Fire, Order of the Phoenix, Half-Blood Prince, and Deathly Hallows. It will feature a new cast to lead a new generation of fandom, full of the fantastic detail and much-loved characters fans have loved for over twenty-five years.
The Harry Potter seven-book series was adapted into eight films that earned over $7 billion at the worldwide box office. Warner Bros. also has the Fantastic Beasts prequel series of films under its belt, including 2016’s Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, 2018’s Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, and 2022’s Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore.
