Fight Club and Zodiac director David Fincher has revealed his ideas for the canned World War Z sequel he was set to direct, and it was perhaps a little too close to another post-apocalyptic property.

During a pretty good interview with GQ, ahead of the release of his latest film The Killer, starring Michael Fassbender, Fincher was asked about what he had planned for the now-defunct World War Z sequel and he states that it had a bit of The Last of Us to it—specifically Craig Mazin’s HBO adaptation.

”Well, it was a little like The Last of Us. I’m glad that we didn’t do what we were doing, because The Last of Us has a lot more real estate to explore the same stuff,” says Fincher, ”In our title sequence, we were going to use the little parasite… they used it in their title sequence, and in that wonderful opening with the Dick Cavett, David Frost-style talk show.”

Fincher goes on to suggest whatever version of the film Paramount is making now, it’ll perhaps be closer to Max Brooks’ original novel.

Fincher is promoting his latest Netflix collaboration The Killer. It sees Michael Fassbender play an eccentric hitman who obsesses over details and meditates to The Smiths.

The movie is set to hit theaters this Friday before making its streaming bow on Netflix on November 10, 2023.
