Cate Blanchett bought a PlayStation 5 in order to prepare for her role in Borderlands.
Borderlands releases in United States theaters this coming August. Directed by Eli Roth, the film, which is based on the popular Gearbox Software video game series of the same name, sees Blancett play an outlaw character named Lilith.
Speaking to Empire Magazine, Blanchett said that she bought a PS5 and played Borderlanders with her husband in order to prepare to star in the forthcoming film.
“My thumbs can barely control a phone, but I bought a PS5 and we played each other,” she said. “I wanted to know the limits of the game and what fans loved about the character. I got really absorbed in that whole world. The cosplayers. The YouTube make-up tutorials.”
Blanchett also discussed why she wanted to star in the movie, saying, “The crazy asks are usually the things I gravitate towards; the things I could never conceive of. I think there also may have been a little Covid madness — I was spending a lot of time in the garden, using the chainsaw a little too freely. My husband said, ‘This film could save your life.’”
Along with Blanchett, Borderlands stars Kevin Hart, Jack Black, Edgar Ramírez, Araiana Greenblatt, Florian Munteanu, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Gina Gershon.
“Lilith (Blanchett), an infamous bounty hunter with a mysterious past, reluctantly returns to her home, Pandora, the most chaotic planet in the galaxy,” the synopsis reads. “Her mission is to find the missing daughter of Atlas (Ramírez), the universe’s most powerful S.O.B. Lilith forms an unexpected alliance with a ragtag team of misfits – Roland (Hart), a seasoned mercenary on a mission; Tiny Tina (Greenblatt), a feral pre-teen demolitionist; Krieg (Munteanu), Tina’s musclebound protector; Tannis (Curtis), the oddball scientist who’s seen it all; and Claptrap (Black), a wiseass robot. Together, these unlikely heroes must battle an alien species and dangerous bandits to uncover one of Pandora’s most explosive secrets. The fate of the universe could be in their hands – but they’ll be fighting for something more: each other. Based on one of the best-selling videogame franchises of all time, welcome to Borderlands.”
Borderlands releases in United States theaters on August 9, 2024, from Lionsgate.
