The cast of Blade Runner 2099 continues to grow. The Prime Video adaptation has added eight actors to an ensemble that includes Michelle Yeoh and Hunter Schafer.
Dimitri Abold (The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes), Lewis Gribben (Somewhere Boy), Katelyn Rose Downey (The Nun II), and Daniel Rigby (Renegade Nell) will all appear as series regulars. Johnny Harris (A Gentleman In Moscow), Amy Lennox (Only Child), Sheila Atim (The Woman King), and Matthew Needham (House of the Dragon) will be featured in recurring guest roles.
Although character details remain under wraps, there is some information known about who Yeoh will be playing. The Oscar-winning Everything Everywhere All At Once actress will portray Olwen, described as a replicant that’s nearing the end of her life. Blade Runner 2099 is currently in production in Prague, with plans to also film in Barcelona.
Although plot details remain under wraps as well, it is known that the series will take place after the events of the original Blade Runner and the sequel Blade Runner 2049. In terms of the show’s creative team and the behind-the-scenes crew, Silka Luisa is set to serve as the showrunner and executive produces the series alongside Ridley Scott, Andrew Kosove, Broderick Johnson, Ben Roberts, David W. Zucker, Clayton Krueger, Tom Spezialy, Richard Sharkey, Michael Green, Cynthia Yorkin, Frank Giustra, Isa Dick Hackett, and Jonathan van Tulleken, the latter of whom is also directing the first two episodes.
The project has taken some time to reach audiences. It was first announced by none other than Ridley Scott, who directed the original movie, in November 2021. Amazon later announced that the series was in development as of February 2022. Blade Runner 2099 was then formally greenlit in September 2022. It follows Prime Video’s foray into genre television of all stripes, including the sci-fi Outer Range, the horror anthology Them, and the superhero satire The Boys.
“The original Blade Runner, directed by Ridley Scott, is considered one of the greatest and most influential science-fiction movies of all time, and we’re excited to introduce Blade Runner 2099 to our global Prime Video customers,” Amazon boss Vernon Sanders said in a statement when the project received an official series order. “We are honored to be able to present this continuation of the Blade Runner franchise, and are confident that by teaming up with Ridley, Alcon Entertainment, Scott Free Productions, and the remarkably talented Silka Luisa, Blade Runner 2099 will uphold the intellect, themes, and spirit of its film predecessors.”
