A24 is reportedly searching for more “action and big IP projects” to distribute.
According to a recent article published by The Wrap, A24 — the film and television production and distribution company largely known for putting out smaller-budget, character-focused projects — is beginning to search for more commercial movies and shows to distribute.
A top agent familiar with the company told The Wrap that the A24 is “deemphasizing the traditional character/auteur-driven dramas.”
Another individual involved with the company countered this by saying the studio wasn’t necessarily going to stop putting out these types of “auter-driven” films. Rather, they said A24 is “doing more” by looking at bigger projects and “widening the aperture.”
According to sources speaking with The Wrap, A24 lost a significant amount of money over the past several years on projects such as 2019’s Waves, 2021’s The Green Knight, and 2023’s Beau Is Afraid.
“Everyone in the independent film space is aware that A24 needs to pivot to more commercial films alongside its arthouse slate,” a distribution executive said. “With a $2.5 billion valuation, it’s pretty obvious that they need to expand into more commercial films.”
Founded in 2012, A24 has put out a number of highly-regarded dramas over the years. Two A24 films have won Best Picture at the Academy Awards, 2016’s Moonlight and 2022’s Everything Everywhere All At Once. A number of actors have also won Academy Awards for starring in A24 films, including Brie Larson for 2015’s Room, Youn Yuh-jung for 2020’s Minari, and Michelle Yeoh, Ke Huy Quan, and Jamie Lee Curtis for Everything Everywhere All At Once.
The studio has also been involved with a number of horror projects, such as 2016’s The Witch, 2018’s Hereditary, 2019’s Midsommar, 2021’s Saint Maud, and many more. Television series produced by A24 include Netflix’s Beef, HBO’s Euphoria, and others.
Recently, while continuing to put out dramas like The Iron Claw, the studio has begun developing a Friday the 13th prequel series, Crystal Lake. A24 is also looking to secure the rights to make a Halloween television series.
