Besides Stan, A Different Man stars Renate Reinsve, Adam Pearson, C. Mason Wells, Owen Kline, Charlie Korsmo, Patrick Wang, and Michael Shannon.
A24’s synopsis reads: “Aspiring actor Edward undergoes a radical medical procedure to drastically transform his appearance. But his new dream face quickly turns into a nightmare, as he loses out on the role he was born to play and becomes obsessed with reclaiming what was lost.”
Stan said it took up to three hours to apply the prosthetics needed to play a man with neurofibromatosis. The actor explained how the transformation unfortunately made people “uncomfortable,” making it harder for them to connect.
“And then I had this time, so I would walk down the street, get a coffee. I was too scared to do it alone, like I had to have my friend with me,” Stan told IndieWire. “I would just see what would happen. And everyone, [in] every single place, was responding to me and not once did someone think that I was an actor. Everyone just believed it.”
A Different Man is written and directed by Aaron Schimberg. Producers include Christine Vachon, Gabriel Mayers, and Vanessa McDonnell. It’s a reunion for Schimberg and Pearson, who collaborated on the 2018 film Chained for Life.
A Different Man premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival in January 2024. It then screened at the 2024 Berlin International Film Festival, with Stan receiving the Silver Bear for Best Leading Performance.
A Different Man arrives in theaters on September 20, 2024.
