The Lagos State Police Command have arrested one Dr. Kadiri Akeem, a lecturer at the University of Lagos (UNILAG), for allegedly raping a 20-year-old female undergraduate student.
The alleged victim – whose identity was not disclosed – accused Dr. Kadiri, an Associate Professor of Botany, of sexually defiling her during her visit to his office to address issues related to her result.
According to the victim who reported him to an NGO called the Inclusive Social Welfare and Empowerment Foundation, the incident occurred on August 16, 2023.
The NGO subsequently reported the case to the Gender Unit of the state Police Command, prompting action from the Commissioner of Police, CP Idowu Owohunwa. A warrant of arrest for Dr. Kadiri was then issued by the state High Court through the OC Gender.
The Vice Chancellor of the university was given a seven-day ultimatum to produce Dr. Babalola for questioning. When questioned, the lecturer reportedly confessed to the crime.
Upon learning of this confession, the Vice Chancellor promptly notified the police through the school’s Chief Security Officer, leading to Dr. Babalola’s arrest.
The spokesperson for the state Police Command, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, have confirmed the arrest and stated that the suspect would be charged to court soon.
“He is to appear in court in the coming days,” the PPRO added.
In other news, a 100-level student of the Federal University of Oye Ekiti (FUOYE), identified as Atanda Modupe Deborah, has been found dead two days after her disappearance.
