Manchester United football director, John Murtough has revealed why the club appointed Ralf Rangnick on an interim basis after the sack of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Solskjaer, a Man United legend, was sacked early last month after a series of bad results that saw the Red Devils swatted 4-1 by relegation battling Watford.

Murtough explained that Rangnickโ€™s appointment was to afford United hierarchy the time to conduct a search for a long-term successor to Solskjaer.

Erik ten Hag of Ajax, Mauricio Pochettino of Paris Saint-Germain and Leicester City boss, Brendan Rodgers are top on the list of managers waiting to be called upon for the United job.

โ€œBy bringing in Ralf, we can now take time to run a thorough process for our next permanent manager,โ€ Murtough said, according to Metro.

โ€œRecruiting a manager is one of the most important decisions a football club makes so we want to do it in a careful and considered fashion.

โ€œWe have an agreement with Ralf to stay on for a further two years in a consultancy role โ€“ allowing us to continue drawing on his expertise and advice to support our longer-term goals.โ€
