Arsenal defender, Ben White, has backed himself to become the club’s next captain after Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was stripped of the captaincy armband earlier this month.

Whites, who stated this ahead of Arsenal’s away Premier League tie against Norwich City on Boxing Day, said the Gunners players are missing Aubameyang, who he described as a ‘nice guy’.

Aubameyang has not featured for Arsenal since their Premier League defeat to Everton on December 6.

Aubameyang’s future at Arsenal is in doubt after manager, Mikel Arteta, dropped his captain from his squad due to a ‘disciplinary breach’.

The Gabonese international has missed Arsenal’s last four Premier League matches against Southampton, West Ham, Leeds United and Sunderland.

Asked if Aubameyang’s situation has been a distraction for Arsenal, White told talkSPORT: “It hasn’t really looked like it on the scoresheet. We have been playing well.

“Obviously, it’s disappointing for Auba, but we have all got our heads down and we are working hard.

“He’s a really nice guy, we all miss him, but it is what it is.”

On the suggestions he could be Arsenal captain, White added: “I’ve never done it before, but it would obviously be an absolute honour to be captain.

“I think I have got some of the qualities to be captain but will see in time.”
