Chelsea boss, Thomas Tuchel, has identified striker, Romelu Lukaku, as the Blues player that is ‘super important’ following his side’s Premier League 3-1 victory over Aston Villa on Boxing Day.
Tuchel said Lukaku doesn’t need a speech to play, adding that the Belgium international is a key player in Chelsea’s squad.
A goal from Lukaku and Jorginho’s penalty brace ensured Chelsea defeated Aston Villa.
Reece James did score an own goal during the encounter at Villa Park.
Speaking at his post-match press conference after the game, Tuchel said, “There is no doubt he is super important. Every player is, but Romelu will be a key player.
“He was unlucky to get injured, then struggled to come back in the schedule, then Covid. 45 minutes was more than the fitness department recommended, but we thought we could take the risk.”
Tuchel added, “He does not need me to play a game like this, he doesn’t need a speech. He just needs to get fit and this isn’t easy when you have an injury and a body like Rom.
“If you look in detail, you see we are struggling and taking some huge risks, but today we forced Callum to play 90 minutes. That’s the way it is.”
The win over Aston Villa means Chelsea still maintains the third position on the Premier League table with 6 points behind leaders Manchester City.
