Former Arsenal midfielder, Jack Wilshere has recalled how he was able to wear the coveted no.10 shirt at the club.
The shirt is considered befitting for exceptional players with the likes of Robin van Persie and Dennis Bergkamp donning it for the Gunners before Wilshere.
Wilshere said that apart from being an outstanding player, one also just need to be in the right place at the right time.
The former England star, who is currently back training with the Gunners, wore the shirt number at the Emirates Stadium until he left in 2018.
Wilshere said that getting hold of the shirt was easier for him than one might think.
He took it from Van Persie, who was a legend at Arsenal before he signed for Manchester United in 2012.
Asked how he managed to get the number ahead of his teammates, Wilshere told talkSPORT, “I asked for it”.
When asked who had it before him, he said, “it was Van Persie.
“There were rumours. It was awkward actually because there were rumours about him leaving for United.
“I didn’t know what was happening and I didn’t know what was going on.
“But I went to see the manager and said, ‘Look, I’m not sure what’s happening with Robin and I don’t really want to know, that’s not why I’m coming here, but if he does go could I have the No.10?’
“He just said, ‘Yeah, of course’.”
