Job Description
As the Environmental Health and Safety Officer at our furniture manufacturing company, you will ensure compliance with national health, safety, and environmental regulations to safeguard the well-being of employees and the environment.
Your role will focus on implementing effective safety policies, conducting regular inspections, and fostering a safety-first culture to reduce accidents and hazards in the workplace.
You will also be instrumental in training staff and managing emergency response initiatives in alignment with regulations, including the National Policy on Occupational Safety and health, Factories Act and other relevant health and safety laws.
Responsibilities
Develop and implement safety policies: Design and update safety protocols in line with Nigerian legislation on health and safety and industry best practices to mitigate workplace hazards.
Conduct regular inspections: Perform safety audits, hazard assessments, and inspections of the factory’s work environment to ensure compliance with safety standards.
Safety training: Organize and deliver regular safety training for all employees, focusing on proper equipment handling, emergency procedures, and accident prevention.
Risk assessments: Identify potential hazards related to the production process, equipment, and chemicals used in manufacturing, providing recommendations for mitigation.
Waste management oversight: Ensure proper waste disposal, hazardous material management, and environmental conservation practices within the factory premises.
Reporting and documentation: Prepare and submit safety performance reports, incident logs, and regulatory compliance documents to the relevant authorities.
Promote safety culture: Foster a proactive safety culture where all employees are encouraged to take responsibility for their health and safety and that of others.
Incident investigation: Lead investigations into workplace accidents and incidents, analyse causes, and recommend corrective measures to prevent future occurrences.
Emergency preparedness: Develop, maintain, and periodically review emergency response plans and procedures, including fire drills, first aid, and evacuation protocols.
Ensure regulatory compliance: Maintain up-to-date knowledge of Nigerian health, safety, and environmental laws and regulations, ensuring the company complies with all local and national requirements.
Requirements
A minimum of B.Sc / HND in Engineering and Sciences.
3 – 5 years of experience in a health and safety role, preferably in the manufacturing sector.
Must possess membership of ISPON (Institute of Safety Professionals of Nigeria) certificate or in-View
Proven experience in conducting risk assessments, safety audits, and accident investigations.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to train and engage employees at all levels.
Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage safety programs.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office and safety management software.
Ability to respond to emergencies calmly and effectively
Certification in Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) levels I, II, and III.
In-depth knowledge and understanding of Nigerian safety regulations, including the National Policy on Occupational Safety and health, Factories Act and other relevant health and safety laws
