MFM Devotional For Today MESSAGE:
Today, we will round off this discourse by looking at more benefits that accrue from giving God thanks.
Gratitude leads to joy. The tree of gratitude produces the sweet fruit of joy. Whenever we realise the abundant goodness of God and we respond with thanksgiving to God, our reward will be overflowing joy. A good example of this was when, in Psalm 126, the Hebrew exiles sang their thanks for bringing them back to Israel. “When the LORD brought back the captivity of Zion, we were like those who dream. Then our mouth was filled with laughter, and our tongue with singing. Then they said among the nations, The LORD has done great things for them. The LORD has done great things for us, and we are glad” (Psalm 126:1-3 NKJV).

Giving God thanks also helps us to defy satan’s lies. He deceived our first parents and made them to sin against God. The Garden of Eden was perfect and it produced abundantly. Every plant in the Garden but ONE had been given to Adam and Eve, yet satan focused on the one God forbade them to eat. When we focus on what we have and thank God continually for it, He will give us other things we do not have, especially if they are in His perfect will for us. True gratitude for God and the abundance He gives protects us from caving to the enemy’s lies. Always remember God’s promise that no good thing will He withhold from those who walk uprightly (Psalm 84:11).
Giving God thanks does more for us. It helps us to guard against envy. Believers should avoid envy like a plague. It is envy that makes us want what someone else has. A heart that is fully grateful has no room left for envy. Gratitude makes us appreciate and enjoy God’s goodness in the present. It helps us not to violate Ecclesiastes 7:10 that admonishes, “Say not, why were the former days better than these? For it is not from wisdom that you ask this.” Finally, gratitude enables us to openly acknowledge what God has done for us and to proclaim a personal, caring God to the world around us.
