TOPIC: A Harvest Of Blessings Requires Patience And Persistence
BIBLE TEXT: “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” – Galatians 6:9
If you have ever lived in the country side and engaged in farming for a living, you will surely understand exactly what today’s text means. It is one thing to plant a few tomatoes and vegetables in your back yard; it’s something else to plant maize or cassava on 5,000 acres of land. Engaging in full-time farming is a year-round task. You start early and you work late, 52 weeks a year. There is no end of the tasks to be done on the field. You can’t be a farmer and treat your job as a weekend hobby. Even during the winter there is equipment to maintain and preparation to be made for the upcoming planting season. Harvests don’t come by accident, you have to work and labor for it with patience and persistence. If you want the harvest, you’ve got to work when you feel like giving up.
Speaking on the importance of persistence over the long haul, Calvin Coolidge declared that “Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with great talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence, determination alone are omnipotent.”
The above assertion is especially true in the spiritual realm. The fact that we live in a fallen world and deal constantly with fallen people makes it so easy to grow weary and get discouraged when we encounter a little bit of difficulty, discomfort and displeasure. We need to come to terms with the realities of life. One of such realities affirms that challenges of life are inevitable but they are surmountable. Therefore when life is hard, deal with it. When people become jerks, love them. When things don’t go as you planned, keep on moving forward.
When people forget to say, “Thank you.” Help them. When they prove too heady, share Christ with them. When your prayers are unanswered, keep praying. When you feel God doesn’t do what you think he should do, trust him the more. When you are scared and filled with fear, keep believing. When your friends criticize you, keep doing the right thing.
Beloved of God, do you feel like quitting? It’s always too soon to quit. Keep on sowing even if it’s through your tears and with a weary heart. In the end you will rejoice when the harvest finally comes in. When you are knocked down by discouragement, don’t stay down. Get up and get back in the game for the glory of God. Great victories await those with great endurance. Don’t give up! Don’t stop! Don’t grow weary! Keep on going. There will be a wonderful harvest to come.
