TOPIC: Overcoming Career Challenges

BIBLE TEXT: “A person can do nothing better than to eat and drink and find satisfaction in their own toil. This too, I see, is from the hand of God, for without him, who can eat or find enjoyment?” – Ecclesiastes 2:24-25

Very important to God is what man does for livelihood. It is an important part of a man’s life. According to Genesis 2:15, it is so important to the point that the very first thing that God introduced to man after creation is ‘work’.

Life is designed in such a way that at a particular stage, one moves from the level of being financially dependent to being independent. Each person becomes independent to source for livelihood and feed himself by the means of whatever he has chosen as a career. So, in 2Thessalonians 3:10, Paul the apostle, trying to encourage towards diligence and hard work, says that whosoever does not work should not eat. This goes with the popular slogan ‘NO FOOD FOR LAZY MAN’.

The fact that work is the source of livelihood makes it a major point of attack. The devil vehemently attacks people’s career and work life leading to assorted problems.The book of Ecclesiastes presents two major ideas of work life experience. One is the ideal and the other is the opposite.The ideal is what should be while the opposite is what obtains.The ideal, as presented by the preacher, is to be gainfully employed or engaged and satisfactorily enjoy the fruit of ones toil and labor. Ecc.2:24, 3:12-13, 22, 5:18. On the other hand the opposite is presented in the form of what characterizes work life experience. According to the writer, work life is characterized by Fruitlessness(Ecc.2:22,3:9), Pain, Grief and Restlessness (Ecc.2:23, 5:16.), Frustration, Affliction and Anger- Ecc.5:17.

You will agree with me that the above aptly summarize the different kinds of experiences that people face in the labor market. Various challenges abound such as: Unemployment, Unholy Retrenchment, Sudden Disengagement, Wrong Placement, Irregular Salary, Nonpayment of Allowances and Pay cuts, Different forms of Exploitation, Lack of promotion,
Work overload, Bad Economy, Customer Related Challenges, Finance Related Challenges and many more.

These challenges had placed untold hardships upon many people. A lot of people have been impoverished financially, maritally, psychologically, medically and in many other areas of life. Many have been relegated to the background while some others have been displaced as a result of work related challenges.

Beloved of God, these challenges are not part of God’s design for your work life. With prayers, faithfulness, patience and trust in God, If you pray and trust more in God, you can overcome your career challenges, enjoy your work and find satisfaction in what you do.

Prophetic Prayer

I pray for you today:

1. May the Lord prosper you this week
2. You will not labor in vain
3. The Lord will deliver you from every career frustration
4. He will fight for you in your work place.
5. Receive grace for satisfaction and fulfillment
   So shall it be in Jesus name. Amen
