TOPIC: Knowing This

READ: Romans 6:3-11 (NKJV)

  1. Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death?
  2. Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.
  3. For if we have been united together in the likeness of His death, certainly we also shall be [in the likeness] of [His] resurrection,
  4. knowing this, that our old man was crucified with [Him,] that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin.
  5. For he who has died has been freed from sin.
  6. Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with Him,
  7. knowing that Christ, having been raised from the dead, dies no more. Death no longer has dominion over Him.
  8. For [the death] that He died, He died to sin once for all; but [the life] that He lives, He lives to God.
  9. Likewise you also, reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

THE MESSAGE:

A popular secular adage says “Knowledge is power.” Jesus in John 8:32, said “…you shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free.” Against this backdrop, Paul emphasised the need for every believer to know the truth about the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ and its effect over sin.

What are these truths? They are:

  1. Our baptism in Christ shows that we died, got buried with Him and resurrected to a new life, just as Christ died, got buried and resurrected to life (verses 3-4);
  2. Our old sinful life was crucified with Him on the cross, therefore, we died to sin and are freed from the power of sin (verses 6-7);
  3. Christ was crucified, died once for all and resurrected to destroy the power of sin and enable us to live for God (verses 9-10).

We must therefore know that the power of sin on the believer has been totally destroyed. Christ paid the ransom with His life to set us free. This knowledge must be absorbed into our blood stream to prevent us from going back to our old life of sin. The new life and sin are mutually exclusive. Read 2 Corinthians 5:17 and consider yourself dead to sin but alive to God in Christ!

PRAYER: Dear Lord, thank You for granting us victory over sin. Amen.
