A line of biopics about iconic hip hop artists is set to be produced, with the first being a Queen Latifah biopic. Will Smith will serve as one of the producers.
Flavor Unit Entertainment, Westbrook Studios, and Jesse Collins Entertainment will collaborate to produce a series of hip hop biopics. Queen Latifah will also produce the biopic about herself alongside Shakim Compere for Flavor Unit Entertainment, while Smith and Miguel Melendez will produce under Westbrook Studios.
Meanwhile, Jesse Collins and Dionne Harmon will produce the project for Jesse Collins Entertainment, the studio behind some music biopics including The New Edition Story and The Bobby Brown Story. Charlie Mack will also produce the project.
The Oscar nominee is known for her roles in various movies and television shows, but the hip hop industry — for her — helped shape her into the artist she is now.
“We all came into this industry together and Hip Hop has shaped each and every one of us. Hip Hop’s impact has expanded beyond just music and has created a lasting impression on culture and society overall. It is a dream to be able to collaborate with friends and colleagues that have not only a shared understanding, but are able to tell these stories that were the backdrop of our lives,” Queen Latifah and Compere of Flavor Unit Entertainment said in a statement.
Queen Latifah has released a slew of iconic tracks, including “Black Hand Side,” “Just Another Day,” “U.N.I.T.Y.,” “Ladies First,” and “Court Is In Session,” among others.
On the acting side, the rapper also starred in features like Set it Off, Chicago, Beauty Shop, Last Holiday, The Secret Life of Bees, Hairspray, Just Wright, Bessie, Girls Trip, Hustle, and more. Her television credits include Living Single, Star, When the Streetlights Go On, and The Equalizer.
Other details about the planned Queen Latifah biopic remain under wraps.
