Kit Harington says he “kind of backed out” of the Jon Snow Game of Thrones spin-off.
In June 2022, it was reported that a Game of Thrones spin-off series revolving around Harington’s Jon Snow character was in early development. There was little news of the project following that and, in April 2024, Harington revealed that the project is now “off the table.”
“Currently, it’s off the table, because we all couldn’t find the right story to tell that we were all excited about enough,” Harington told ScreenRant. “So, we decided to lay down tools with it for the time being. There may be a time in the future where we return to it, but at the moment, no. It’s firmly on the shelf.”
Speaking with GQ Magazine, Harington explained why the Jon Snow series never came to fruition.
“What I can tell you is it was HBO that came to me and said, ‘Would you consider this?’ My first reaction was no,” he explained. “And then I thought there could be an interesting and important story about the soldier after the war. I felt that there might be something left to say and a story left to tell in a pretty limited way. We spent a couple of years back and forth developing it. And it just didn’t… nothing got us excited enough. In the end, I kind of backed out and said, ‘I think if we push this any further and keep developing it we could end up with something that’s not good. And that’s the last thing we all want.’”
Harington played Jon Snow for all eight seasons of Game of Thrones, which can currently be streamed on Max. The first two seasons of the prequel spin-off series House of the Dragon can also be streamed on Max.
