Job Title: Legal OfficerLocation: Oniru, Victoria Island, LagosEmployment Type: Full-time
Job Summary
The Legal Officer is responsible for undertaking legal research, secretarial, administrative, and related tasks, and supports the Department in the provision of legal advisory and related services to the organization in the pursuit of corporate goals, and to manage legal risks.
Responsibilities
Provide general legal advice on diverse issues as directed
Support the provision of legal advisory services and related services, by undertaking tasks assigned
Undertake legal research, consultation, and liaison to gather information on specific issues
Keep abreast of applicable laws, regulations, statutory requirements, and changes; distill implications for the business and advise management and responsible officers accordingly;
Preparation of Monthly Legal Bulleting for the Business
Enquiries and information from regulatory agencies
Draft legal documents, contracts, letters, reports, etc.
Respond to correspondence as directed
Manage the departmental filing system and structure
Maintains dockets and calendars for departmental functions
Serve as secretary and perform secretarial duties for assigned committees and meetings; take minutes of meetings, action plans and circulate to participants

Assignment turnaround time; timely reporting, filing, and completion of assigned work
Quality of research, error rate of legal writing (documents), advice, and insights generated

Savings from litigation and other dispute resolutions
Legal expenses, penalties incurred for assigned work areas
Effective resolution of conflict; success rate
Serve as secretary and perform secretarial duties for assigned committees and meetings; take minutes of meetings, action plans and circulate to participants
Update and manage the Regulatory Compliance Calendar
Prepare and ensure accuracy of documents to be uploaded for Licenses & Registrations
Manage Regulatory Portals such as SON, NAFDAC, MAN, BPP, NCMDB, etc
Liaise with Business Units on Regulatory remittances such as ITF, NSITF, PENCOM, etc.
Key focus on departmental liaison for Lubricants Business
Attend and represent the organization at court and other legal hearings
Pursue resolution of individual allocated cases proactively at all stages of the prosecution
Provide advice/assistance to police, counsel, and other prosecuting or investigating authorities
Person Specification
Bachelor’s Degree in Law from an accredited law school with admittance into the bar
3 – 5 years post call experience
Experience in corporate and commercial Law is an added advantage
A Masters in Law is an added advantage
Sound knowledge of the legal and regulatory environment including laws, regulations, procedures, statutory requirements, commercial and corporate law
Self-motivated
Interpersonal and relationship management skills
Good organizational skills
Teamwork
Ability to travel at short notice.
Legal research, secretarial, and advisory skills
Ability to prepare prosecutions of moderate complexity
Sound verbal and written communication skills, with good legal writing capabilities
IT Skills (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, etc.
