The National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will replace the National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu with Sunday Udeh-Okoye.

The South East Zonal Executive Committee of the PDP announced Udeh-Okoye’s nomination in a communique dated October 20, 2023.

According to the communique, the unanimous decision to replace Anywanwu was reached at a meeting attended by members across the geopolitical zone on Friday.

Party members in the region expressed the view that Anyanwu assuming the roles of national secretary and standard-bearer for the PDP in Imo would prove to be a distraction.

The stakeholders resolved to forward Udeh-Okoye’s name, who hails from Enugu to the NWC of the party and resolved to do “everything humanly possible” to ensure Anyanwu wins the gubernatorial election in Imo.

Recall that the debate about Anyanwu as the PDP national secretary and the party’s flagbearer in the Imo governorship poll had stirred controversy for the past two weeks.

In April, Anyanwu became the PDP gubernatorial candidate for the November 11 Imo election and will slug it out with Governor Hope Uzodimma, who is seeking a second term in office.

However, the acting Chairman of the PDP Board of Trustees (BoT), Adolphus Wabara, had asked Anyanwu to resign as the party’s scribe on the grounds of being the governorship candidate in Imo state.

Reacting, the Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, stated that Wabara and the BoT do not have the authority to declare who can occupy the office of national secretary of the party.
