Only Murders in the Building co-creator John Hoffman addressed the shocking Season 3 finale of Hulu’s comedy mystery series, presumably confirming that the bullet during the show’s closing moments was meant for Steve Martin’s Charles-Haden Savage and not Jane Lynch’s Sazz Pataki. He also teased what fans can expect from the fourth season of the hit television series.

The Season 3 finale saw Sazz being targeted by an assailant in Charles’ apartment. Though Hoffman did not specifically confirm anything, he told TVLine that “it’s Charles’ apartment” after all and that “the lights were off.”

The Latest Murder Can Help Create “Personal Connection” With the Viewers

The murders of Tim Kono (Julian Cihi) in Season 1, Bunny Folger (Jayne Houdyshell) in Season 2, and Ben Glenroy (Paul Rudd) in Season 3 are just a few of the cases that have been explored throughout the three seasons of Only Murders in the Building. However, the show has yet to explore a beloved character’s murder, and in addition to expanding Lynch’s character, the co-creator stated that they wanted to establish a “personal connection” with the audience.

“That’s one of the reasons why we did it. We hadn’t done a beloved [murder victim] before. It’s always hugely helpful to have a personal connection. It drives you, it creates a lot of feelings, and it ties the trio [into our mystery] in ways that feel completely different,” Hoffman told TVLine. “But we also hadn’t done the thing where — I don’t want to say too much — but there were certain things we hadn’t done yet within this setup, and that excited me. It ticked the boxes of the personal, the sad, and of someone surprising, and the audience will feel something. Perhaps they’ll hate us!”

The co-creator also expressed his hopes that they would be able to push through the character’s expanded role in Season 4.

“The character that Jane created is so genius. I want to see and learn more about what her life was like, and what was going on in her life as our trio investigate, but I can’t say too much more than that,” Hoffman added.

All three seasons of Only Murders in the Building are available to stream on Hulu.
