After becoming the highest-grossing film in Warner Bros. Pictures’ history, Barbie now has its sights set on the 2024 Oscars. Variety is reporting that Warner Bros. will campaign in two noteworthy Oscar categories: Best Original Screenplay for Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach, and Best Supporting Actor for Ryan Gosling.

What to Expect in Barbie’s Oscar Campaigns?

Variety previously speculated that Barbie would be campaigning for original screenplay instead of adapted screenplay at the Oscars. Barbie is based on the dolls by Mattel, so it could be argued that it’s adapted material. However, Barbie is a unique and authentic idea from Gerwig and Baumbach, so campaigning in the original screenplay category feels right. The Academy will decide on Barbie’s screenplay designation by January 11, 2024, when nomination ballots open for voting.

The other significant development involves Gosling, who will be submitted for best supporting actor. Gosling stole the show as Barbie’s hilarious and dim-witted friend, Ken. Gosling has been previously nominated for two Oscars: Best Actor for Half Nelson and La La Land.

Additionally, Warner Bros. is expected to run campaigns for Barbie in Best Picture, Best Director for Gerwig, Best Actress for Margot Robbie, Best Supporting Actress for America Ferrera, Best Original Song, and multiple below-the-line categories.

Barbie is available for purchase on digital platforms.
