The Nun 2 has had its official MPA rating and it looks like it’ll be on par with the original movie.
The latest entry in the ever-expanding Conjuring Universe has been rated R for ”violent content and some terror”. That is pretty similar to The Nun, which was also rated R for ”terror, violence, and disturbing/bloody images” back in 2018.
While The Nun wasn’t exactly on the high end of that R rating scale, it did more than enough to earn it.
The Nun 2 sees Taissa Farmiga return as Sister Irene, who once more encounters Demon Nun Valak after the murder of a priest in 1950s France. Joining Farmiga is Storm Reid (The Last of Us) and Bonnie Aarons is back as the titular evil Nun.
Both The Nun and The Nun 2 are spinoffs from James Wan’s The Conjuring 2, where the Demon Nun Valak was a part of the overall plot, but not the main focus in the same way Annabelle was in the first film.
2018’s The Nun was a box office smash as it summoned more than $360 million during its worldwide theatrical run. That made it the most successful movie in the entire franchise to date so you can see why a sequel was an inevitability.
The Nun 2 is the ninth film in the Conjuring Universe, and will no doubt add a healthy stack of cash to the already impressive $2.1 billion box office haul the franchise has hauled in so far. That hasn’t stopped James Wan from thinking about ending the Conjuring Universe with The Conjuring 4 however.
The Nun 2 is in theaters from September 8, 2023.
