Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti revealed his delight that he won a bet made with Federico Valverde.
The Uruguayan’s development over the last couple of seasons has been tremendous, working his way from fringe player to one of Los Blancos’ most important stars.
Capable of playing in central midfield or on the wing, Ancelotti claimed earlier this season that he foretold of Valverde’s ability to add goals to his game, making a bet that he would tear up his coaching licence if he did not reach double figures this season.
Valverde scored twice in Real Madrid’s 5-3 FIFA Club World Cup final win against Al Hilal on Saturday night to take his 2022/23 goal tally to 11, and Ancelotti was asked about their wager post-match.
“I don’t have to tear up my coaching license!” Ancelotti exclaimed.
“Federico has had a difficult time, but he’s coming back. He’s scored two goals but it’s also about the energy he brings, with him and Vinicius on the wings, that gives us a lot up front.”
Ancelotti also reserved praise for Vinicius Junior, who has performed well for Real Madrid this season amid several instances of racial abuse from rival fans in La Liga.
“Vinicius has had the week we all had, hurt by the loss to Mallorca, but focused on preparing well for this tournament,” Ancelotti said.
“Vinicius won’t play on Wednesday [against Elche in La Liga] as he’s suspended, I’ll give him a couple of days off. I think that will be good for him but not because he looks tired, not at all.”
